Take An Edmonds Kind of Art Class
Written by Whitney Popa
Edmonds was designated as Washington State’s first official Certified Creative District in 2018, and the city’s gotten even more art-forward since. From live events to an ongoing mural project to award-winning gastronomy and inventive flash moments (Roper Romp, anyone?), Edmonds has invested in art in more ways than any of us could count.
And one of the best ways that you can experience art in Edmonds is by coming over for an art class! We’ve rounded up some of the biggest players on the scene, one of which just opened on Main Street and lets you use a blow torch (depending on the class and after signing a waiver, naturally). Scroll through the list and pick the best fit(s) for you.
If we know one thing, we know any of them will inspire a return visit.
We want you to stay awhile, so check out our massive guide of what else to see, do, and eat while you’re here.
ArtSpot is abundant in art classes. Some of what’s upcoming? A workshop on painting mushrooms, a paint and sip to make acrylic flower bouquets, linocut print holiday cards and tags, and a few sessions to make different styles of ornaments! If your schedule wasn’t pleasantly packed already, it’s about to be. Check out all the classes and sign up for your favorite sessions here.
Immerse yourself in Pacific Northwest talent and show up inspired to one of Cascadia Art Museum’s upcoming workshops. You can learn everything from stitching to sketching. You can even learn how to mix an art-inspired cocktail at Epulo right next door after an educational museum tour! Pick your workshops here.
Whatever your level or interest, Cole Art Studio meets you there. Consider four weeks of watercolor instruction, mixed media creations, handcrafting your own holiday cards, learning acrylics and oils, artfully smudging graphite, and more. Find your favorite (or get a gift certificate for someone you love) here.
Crow curates a beautiful collection of art and wares from Pacific Northwest artisans, and sometimes, Jen and team allow you to be one of them in the shop’s downstairs art space. Next up? How to make a stained glass crow, which is very apropos. Sign up here.
Not only does the Edmonds Waterfront Center boast truly excellent views, but it also has a huge lineup of art classes of all kinds: woodworking, watercolor, quilting, and more. If you want to immerse yourself in Edmonds in a big way, bookmark their calendar here.
In its gorgeous gallery on the corner of 2nd and Main, Graphite hosts oodles of classes and events. You can drop in to make art with one of the owners, learn how watercolor aids in relaxation, or even create a textured paper using Gelli Plate Printing. Bookmark the schedule and save your seat here.
The Paper Feather is known for its watercolor and calligraphy. The shop is bringing the watercolor bit to all of us in its next workshop focusing on painting a watercolor map of Edmonds. If you’re a big fan of Edmonds, this is the class for you. Learn more and reserve your spot here.
Sunlight Gallery + Studio is always dreaming up the prettiest experiences, and their workshops are no exception. This year, skip the plain paint and try pressed florals on your gourds. Spend a cozy evening crafting with friends. Snack on a grazing board and sip something tasty (like local wines and cocktails). Save the date (11/15) and learn more here.
For the newest place in town (this is the one with the blow torches) for hands-on creative experiences, head to The Workshop NW, a creative arts studio offering classes in everything from metalsmithing to stained glass. The fall class lineup includes gemstone rings, stacking rings, stone beaded necklaces, and more. Grab a friend and pick your class(es) here.
Come Over for Some Edmonds Kind of Art
Edmonds has spent decades building safe spaces for artists to thrive, regardless of skill or level. Whether you’re a first-timer who’s never held a paintbrush or a regular who’s ready for the next challenge, there’s a class in town waiting for you. Pick one, pick three, bring a friend, and don’t be afraid to share what you make (tag us! We’re @exploreedmondswa on Instagram and Facebook). We’ll see you at the easel (or the blowtorch, if that’s your thing).
